Board games on digital technology

CarboBytes is a research project led by the Media Engineering Institute. It develops board games to raise awareness of the environmental impact and materiality of digital activities, encouraging more conscious and responsible usage. See our poster presented at the ICT4S 2026 conference (1.4MB).

Three board games are currently being developed and tested with players at various events:

  • Digital Farm — an advanced/expert game where you must create alternatives to the Gafarm while avoiding resource shortages.
  • Greenwashers — a hand-shedding game where you play as large digital corporations trying to hide their most harmful environmental practices.
  • Deep Digital Journey — a push-your-luck game where you must collect the most points without the growing CO2 cloud collapsing.

In each game, you will learn more about your digital usage.
